Reflection
Before studying Unit 07, I saw history as something fixed and factual. I believed that museums, archives, and academic texts presented the past in a neutral way. This unit helped me understand that history is shaped by power and choice, and that many voices are excluded from mainstream narratives.
A key idea I learned is “history from below.” Instead of focusing on Western and dominant perspectives, the unit encouraged me to look at marginalised voices, including gender-diverse communities and non-Western histories. This changed how I understand cultural production and representation.
The topic of visibility was especially important. I learned that visibility is not always positive. While being seen can bring recognition, it can also lead to control and surveillance. This made me question common ideas about inclusion and representation.
Unit 07 also helped me connect theory with practice as a Culture, Criticism and Curation student. It encouraged me to think critically about how histories are selected, framed, and displayed. Overall, this unit has changed how I approach history, culture, and curatorial work.
